IP Camera NVR FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Here are some frequently asked questions that we hear from customers.
Does CCTV Camera Pros supply complete NVR camera systems?
Yes. You can find some of our
NVR camera systems that include IP cameras here. However, many customers like to mix and match different cameras, so many times we provide a custom quote. You can request a phone consultation and / or free quote here.
How is a network video recorder (NVR) different from a digital video recorder (DVR)?
Generally an NVR refers to a recorder for network IP cameras and a DVR refers to CCTV or HD BNC security cameras. However, sometimes the term DVR is also used to when referring to recorders for IP cameras.
Can I view my security cameras live from a web browser?
Yes. Viewtron DVRs and NVRs can be remotely monitored and managed from all major web browsers. Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Internet Explorer is supported.
Watch a web browser access video demo here.
Can I record on motion detection only on certain channels?
Yes. Each camera can be setup on its own recording type and schedule. For example. Channel 1 record on motion only from 8am to 9pm. Channel 2 continuous recording 24 / 7. Channel 3 motion + continuous - this way it is always recording but motion events are bookmarked.
Where can I download the mobile apps for Viewtron NVRs?
This web page contains links to download the Viewtron mobile apps for iPhone and Android. This page also contains links to download the Viewtron desktop software for Mac and Windows:
You can download the iPhone app, Android app, Windows software and Macintosh software on that page.
Where can I find tech support and setup information about Viewtron NVRs?
You can find our tech support page for Viewtron NVRs, DVRs, and IP cameras on this page:
On the Viewtron support page, you will find links to setup articles and videos to help you setup your Viewtron security camera system.
Do Viewtron NVRs IP have alarm input and alarm relay output ports?
Yes. All Viewtron DVRs and NVRs have alarm input and alarm output ports. If you want to learn how to setup the alarm inputs on Viewtron DVRs and NVRs, please visit this page:
https://videos.cctvcamerapros.com/v/security-dvr-alarm-input.html. You can learn how-to setup the alarm relay output ports on Viewtron DVRs and HVRs here: https://videos.cctvcamerapros.com/v/security-camera-system-alarm-output.html. Please note that some Viewtron IP cameras have built-in alarm input / output ports. You can find the Viewtron IP cameras with alarm input / alarm relay output here.
What is the difference between dual stream and main stream (only) recording?
If you record using the main stream option, you can only view up to 4 cameras at a time when playing back recorded video surveillance footage. When dual stream recording is used, the NVR can playback 16 cameras on one screen.
Can a Viewtron network video recorder also work with analog cameras?
No. Viewtron NVRs only work with network IP cameras. You can find a Viewtron hybrid BNC security DVR on this page that works with analog cameras. By the way, you may have noticed that our Viewtron BNC DVRs do work with IP cameras. However, they are not the best choice if your system will be mostly made up of IP cameras. BNC DVRs do not have PoE ports and they do not support the AI software functions of
Viewtron AI cameras (which are IP based).
Can the PoE ports on the NVR be used for wireless antennas and provide a DHCP server?
The NVR can only act as a DHCP server for IP cameras directly connected to the POE ports on the back. If you are using wireless antennas, you would need to connect the NVR to your router (via the lan connection, not the poe ports) and connect the injector from the receiving antenna into the router as well.
I noticed that the 16 channel, 32 channel, and 64 channel NVR models have 2 Ethernet ports (dual nic). What is this for?
The dual nic ports on Viewtron NVRs allow you to segregate the network traffic of your IP cameras from your main network when you are using an external network switch instead of, or addition to, the built-in PoE ports of the NVR. For example, the 32 channel NVR only has 16 PoE ports, so you must use an external PoE switch to power and connect the other 16 cameras. You may connect this external PoE switch to the 2nd Ethernet port on your NVR and connect Ethernet port 1 on the NVR to your main network. With this setup, the NVR communicates with the IP cameras on a separate LAN and does not use up any network resources on your main network. Please refer to this
dual nic network diagram for more info.
Does the Viewtron NVR software support multiple user logins with different permissions?
Yes, you may create multiple user logins and manage their permissions on the NVR. Please watch this
video to learn how-to create users and manage permissions.
I need a custom security camera system design. Where can I request a quote?
CCTV Camera Pros provides free consultations and security camera system designs. You can request a free consultation and custom system quote on this page:
https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/viewtron-system-quote-s/1490.htm. You can also request a free phone consultation to discuss the requirements for your security camera system. CCTV Camera Pros provides system designs and quotes for home, business, and government applications.
Can I remotely monitor security cameras connected to NVRs at different locations (at the same time)?
Yes, the Viewtron NVMS software for Mac and Windows supports the ability to monitor multiple locations (NVRs and DVRs). You can
watch a video demo of the software connecting to multiple recorders here.
How many users can log in remotely to view security cameras at the same time?
It depends on the NVR model. The below numbers include the desktop NVMS software, web browser access, and the mobile app (iPhone and Android).
The 8ch VT-NVR-8 supports 64 remote clients simultaneously online. It has 12 main-stream channels and 32 sub-stream channels, 44 channels in total. If distributed evenly, 10 concurrent remote users can view about 4 cameras simultaneously.
The 16ch VT-NVR-16 supports 64 Clients simultaneously online. It has 20 main-stream channels and 64 sub-stream channels, 84 channels in total. If distributed evenly, 10 concurrent remote users can view about about 8 cameras simultaneously.
The 32ch VT-NVR-32 supports 128 clients simultaneously online. The VT-NVR-32 can open 36 main-stream channels and 128 sub-stream channels for clients. Take NVMS desktop software (Windows and Mac) for instance, the NVR can open a total of 164(36+128) channels, adding main-stream and sub-stream channels all together.
The 64ch VT-NVR-64 supports 20 Clients online at the same time. It has 68 main-stream channels and 256 sub-stream channels, 324 channels in total.
How much hard drive space do I need?
You can use our online
video storage calculator / hard drive calculator to estimate if the standard hard drive will be large enough or if you should add more storage space to your NVR. Please keep in mind that the video codec / compression that your IP camera uses is a big factor in how much hard drive space you need. Viewtron IP cameras support H.265, H.265+, and H.265s video codecs. These provide much greater video compression over H.264. If you are using Viewtron IP cameras, CCTV Camera Pros currently recommends using the H.265+ setting. In our testing, H.265+ provides maximum video compression without video quality loss.
I have had trouble with other DVR’s in the past when I wanted to give the police or someone else exported video footage. It always required a copy of the DVR software to play the video. If I backup video footage to a USB drive on a Viewtron NVR, will it be in a proprietary format or an open format such as .mpg, .mov, .wmv, etc.?
When exporting video surveillance footage, users can choose between a private proprietary format that also exports an interactive video player software, AVI, and MP4. The MPEG4 and AVI formats can be played back on video players such as Quicktime, VLC, and Windows Media Player. You can watch a video demo of the
video surveillance export process here.
Here is a picture of the back of an 8ch NVR to show where the PoE ports are located. The built-in PoE ports of Viewtron NVRs allows you to hard wire your IP cameras directly to the NVR using network cable (CAT5 / CAT6). Power over Ethernet is so convenient because it supplies power to your cameras. The 8ch NVR has 8 PoE ports. The 16ch NVR has 16 PoE ports. The 32ch NVR has 16 PoE ports, so an additional PoE switch or injectors is needed for the 32ch model.
Viewtron 16 channel, 32 channel, and 64 channel NVR models have dual nic ports (2 Ethernet ports). This allows you to segregate all of your IP camera traffic from your main network. Please refer to the above network diagram.
- The first 16 IP cameras are connected to the 16 PoE ports that are built into the 32 channel NVR.
- IP cameras 17 through 32 are connected to a 16 PoE PoE switch. Please note that each IP camera uses it's own CAT5e or CAT6 network cable. Only one connection is shown in the diagram to keep it simple.
- The network uplink port of the PoE switch is connected to LAN port #2 on the NVR. This allows all of the IP camera traffic to be segregated from the main network.
- Ethernet port #1 on the NVR is connected to the main network router for LAN connectivity and Internet connectivity.
- Important NOTE: This setup requires that you setup static IP addresses on IP cameras 17 through 32 because there is no DHCP server to assign IP addresses automnatically. To setup a static IP address on a Viewtron IP camera, you must login to each camera directly via the web browser interface. You can find static IP address setup for Viewtron IP cameras instructions here.
Viewtron NVRs can be used with

The above diagram shows how a POS system /cash register can be installed with a Viewtron NVR and IP camera. This allows point of sale text overlay over one or more security cameras on your system. The point of sale / cash register is connected to the same network as the network video recorder. This is done by connecting both devices to the same network switch or router using CAT5 or CAT6 network cable. The IP camera can also be connected to the switch or it can be connected directly to the Viewtron NVR (because the NVR has built-in PoE ports). You can learn more about
