4K Security Cameras

4K security cameras are also known as 8mp security cameras because they capture UHD video surveillance at 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution (4K resolution). The 4K cameras on this page are hard wired to a DVR using coax cable or CAT5e cable with video baluns, as opposed to IP cameras that are wired to a network switch using CAT5 cable. These 4K UHD cameras are compatible with AHD, HD-TVI, and HD-CVI format surveillance DVRs.

CCTV Camera Pros highly recommends our Viewtron 4K video recorders (DVRs) which are compatible with all of the 4K cameras on this page. Please check our 4K camera FAQ if you would like to learn more. We also have complete 4K CCTV camera systems available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions that we have compiles based on questions from CCTV Camera Pros customers.

  1. I have an existing security camera system, will these 4K cameras work with my existing DVR?
Maybe. Please refer to the user manual or specification that was included with your DVR and see if it is compatible with AHD 4K, HD-TVI 4K, or HD-CVI 4K video formats. If you need help determining compatibility, you can email us here. Please included the manufacturer and model number of your DVR.
  2. Do these cameras work in zero light and low lighting conditions?
Yes. All of our 4K cameras with built-in IR night vision can see in low light and complete darkness. Please note that infrared cameras capture video in black and white when they switch into IR night vision mode.
  3. Is 4K and 8MP (megapixel) the same thing?
Yes. These are two ways to refer to security cameras and DVRs that capture and record video surveillance at 4K resolution. These cameras are also sometimes referred to as 4K ultra HD security cameras and 4K UHD resolution cameras (ultra high definition).
  4. How much higher is 4K vs 1080p resolution?
4K is four times the resolution of 1080p. This can be calculated as follows. 3840 x 2160 = 8,294,400 pixels. 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 pixels. Click here is see a image comparison of 4K vs 1080p security cameras.
  5. What is the difference between bullet cameras and dome cameras?
These are two different housing styles that 4K cameras are available in. It does not impact the image quality. It is a style and installation preference.
  6. I noticed that 4K DVRs record at a lower frame rate than 1080p. What does 4K at 8 frames per second look like? Is the recording choppy?
7.5FPS and 8 FPS is totally sufficient for most residential, commercial, and government systems. Please watch this 4K video demo to see for yourself.
  7. Is 4K CCTV camera video as clear as a 4K IP camera? Yes, and you can judge for yourself. Please watch this 4K CCTV camera video to see for yourself.
  8. Do 4K cameras support digital zoom?
Actually the digital zoom functions are typically the operation of the DVR that the camera is recording to. But yes, because of the ultra high resolution of 4K cameras, digital zoom works extremely well. Take a look at this side-by-side comparison of a 4K security camera vs 1080p at 4x digital zoom.
  9. Are 4K cameras best for facial recognition?
Generally, the higher resolution a security camera is, the better it will be at facial recognition. However, there are limits and realistic expectations should be set. Please watch this video that demonstrates facial recognition using a 4K security camera at various distances.
  10. Are 4K cameras recommended for home security systems?
Yes. CCTV Camera Pros supplies our 4K cameras for home, business, and government surveillance systems.
  11. How do I upgrade from analog CCTV to 4K CCTV?
If you have an existing analog CCTV camera system in place with high quality RG59 cable, you can replace your existing cameras with the 4K CCTV cameras on this page. You will also need to replace your old DVR with one of our these 4K CCTV DVRs. The process is very simple and CCTV Camera Pros has the best support available if you need it.
  12. Do 4K cameras support license plate capture?
At this time, we do not have any 4K resolution license plate capture / recognition cameras (LPR cameras). 4K resolution is not necessary for license plate capture as LPR cameras are typically focused narrowly on a single lane of traffic. 1080p resolution LPR cameras are more that sufficient to capture plates. The good news is that our iDVR-PRO surveillance DVRs support 1080p and 4K cameras so we can custom build an LPR system for customers with 4K overview cameras and 1080p LPR cameras.
  13. How far can cable be run to 4K cameras?
CCTV Camera Pros has tested and confirmed that RG59 coax cable can be run up to 900 feet. Based on this, we assume that RG6 will support at least 1000 feet.
  14. Can I use pre-made Siamese cable with 4K cameras?
Yes. We have tested all of our pre-made Siamese cables, including 150 and 165 foot lengths.
  15. Can I use CAT5-E or CAT6 cable to wire 4K security cameras?
Yes. You can use CAT-5e or CAT6 by using 4K compatible CCTV video baluns.

4K Camera Cable

One of the advantages of BNC type 4K cameras is that they can use the same RG59 coax cable as traditional CCTV cameras and the cable runs can be just as long (max distance about 900 feet). Our RG59 Siamese cable options have been tested with 4K AHD and 4K HD-TVI cameras. They are guaranteed 100% by CCTV Camera Pros to work effectively.

In addition to RG59 coax cable, 4K security cameras (AHD, HD-CVI, HD-TVI) can also be wired using CAT-5e and CAT6 cable by using these 4k compatible HD video baluns. HD video baluns convert the UTP cable in CAT5 to BNC connections on the camera and DVR end of the cable run. You can learn more about video baluns for HD security cameras here.

4K Surveillance DVRs

4K AHD and 4K HD-TVI cameras do require a surveillance DVR that is compatible. CCTV Camera Pros offers hybrid DVRs that work with multiple video standards including HD-TVI 4K. We highly recommend our Viewtron hybrid DVRs for use with the 4K cameras that we supply. You can learn more about these 4K DVRs here.
