The Viewtron VT-VS5 is an IP video encoder / analog to IP video converter that supports BNC / CCTV cameras up to 5mp resolution. This IP video encoder has a BNC video input that is compatible with HD-TVI, AHD (analog high definition), HD-CVI, and CVBS video formats You can connect just about any type of BNC security cameras up to 5mp resolution into the encoder, except HD-SDI security cameras. The VT-VS5 converts and encodes the analog CCTV video into an ONVIF compliant IP camera video signal, which makes it compatible with any ONVIF compliant DVR / NVR or IP camera software.
CCTV Camera Pros highly recommends using the Viewtron VT-VS5 with
Viewtron IP camera NVRs, so that you can take advantage of the powerful AI software functions (artificial intelligence) that it supports. Besides the high quality analog to IP video conversion provided by the encoder, it also enables human detection, car detection, intrusion detection, perimeter intrusion, object counting, and face detection AI functions. These AI software functions are deeply integrated into the user interface of all Viewtron NVRs, which makes it simple to configure. The Viewtron VT-VS5 turns an ordinary CCTV camera into a powerful AI security camera.
Analog to IP Video Converter Use Cases
Here are some of the ways the Viewtron VT-VS5 is used in security camera installations.
Plug and Play Integration with Viewtron IP Camera NVR
Watch this video to see a demonstration of how the Viewtron VT-VS5 can easily be connected to a PoE port on a Viewtron NVR. The integration is plug and play, just like all of the Viewtron AI security cameras. Mike also discusses the many uses cases for this powerful IP converter and shows how-to setup the AI software functions from the NVR's user interface.

- PoE (Power over Ethernet): PoE Switch and Viewtron NVR PoE ports supported.
- 12V DC power output to CCTV camera
The Viewtron VT-VS5 can connect directly to one of the PoE ports on a Viewtron IP camera NVR. The NVR's PoE port provides power to the IP video converter. The PoE also provides power to the converter's 12V DC power output, which can be used to power the CCTV camera that you are converting to IP. The direct CAT5 connection from the converter to the NVR also makes this a plug and play setup. The IP video converter is automatically detected and seen by the NVR just like any Viewtron IP camera. This includes all of the software setup for any of the
AI functions that are supported.
Please note that using the 12V DC power output is optional. You can continue to use the power cable from Siamese CCTV cables for example. You can see this in the below installation diagram where the CCTV cameras are not using the PoE from the NVR to power them.
Here is a typical installation for a customer that wants to upgrade their analog CCTV camera system to a Viewtron IP camera / NVR system. In this case, the customer wants to use two of their existing coax cable runs because they are difficult locations to replace with network cable. This is how it works.
- The customer's existing RG59 Siamese cable is used to run the power and video cables back to where the NVR in installed. This is the location where the DVR they are replacing used to be.
- They use the existing power supply box to power the analog CCTV cameras.
- The BNC / coax cable that use to plug into their CCTV DVR now plugs into the BNC video input of a Viewtron VT-VS5.
- The RJ-45 network port of the VT-VS5 video servers each plug into a PoE power on the Viewtron NVR. Even though the PoE is not supplying power to the camera's in this example, the PoE from the NVR still powers the video servers.
- For all new cameras locations and any location where the customer can replace their old coax cable, they run CAT5 / CAT6 cable. The new IP cameras are directly hard wired to the PoE ports on the NVR.
In this installation example, the BNC / CCTV cameras are seen by the NVR as Viewtron AI security cameras. The custom gets all of the supported AI software functions on all five cameras. Please note that although we highly recommend Viewtron NVRs for use with our video encoder so you can take advantage of the AI functions, the encoder creates a fully compliant ONVIF video signal which means that you can use any ONVIF complaint NVR or IP camera software with it.
The VT-VS5 turns an analog CCTV camera into a
Viewtron AI security camera that supports human detection and vehicle detection functions. You can setup perimeter intrusion zones or line crossing zones that can trigger video recording and other alarm functions. You can also run the VT-VS5 in facial recognition mode to detect faces and match them up with faces in a database. Please note that you must choose between the human / vehicle detection and facial recognition AI modes. The IP server can not do both at the same time.
Watch this video to understand the big benefit you get from the AI security camera functions that IP encoder provides. The human detection and vehicle detection AI functions are much more reliable than legacy video motion detection provided by analog CCTV camera DVRs. The AI object detection combined with intrusion zones and line crossing zones eliminates false alarms that legacy motion detection is prone to.
Watch this video to see a demonstration of the AI human detection software built into the Viewtron IP video encoder. Please note that this video demo uses a Viewtron AI security camera for the demo, however, the AI human detection function works the same. Also please note that the video demo was done with a 4K resolution security camera. The video server is limited to 5mp resolution.
Watch this video to see a demonstration of the AI car detection software built into the Viewtron analog to IP video converter. Please note that this video demo uses a Viewtron AI security camera, however, the AI car detection function works the same on the converter.
Watch this video to see a demonstration of the line crossing detection AI software built into the Viewtron VT-VS5. Please note that this video demo uses a Viewtron AI security camera, however, the line crossing detection function works the same via the IP encoder. Line crossing detection can be applied to human detection, car detection, or both.
Watch this video to learn how to setup a face recognition capabilities of the video encoder on a Viewtron NVR. This video demonstrated face recognition and face detection. We also demonstrate how to add faces to the face database on the NVR using video surveillance footage recorded on the NVR. You can also add faces to the database using the mobile app. You can watch additional
face recognition camera videos here. Please also before to check out these installation instructions for face recognition cameras.
The face detection function of Viewtron AI cameras makes it easy to trigger alarms based on a human face appearing within the view of the camera. The above screenshot was captured using a Viewtron IP-A4D dome AI camera connected to a
Viewtron IP camera NVR. When a face is detected, the event is recorded in the NVR's database. Thumbnail images can be displays (like you see above) for easy access to playback the recorded video of the facial detection.

The VT-VS5 has 4 alarm input ports and 8 alarm relay output ports. You can connect alarm input devices such as magnetic door sensors and PIR motion detectors to the alarm input ports. You can connect alarm devices such as audio sirens and alarm lights to the alarm relay output ports.
Another common use case for the Viewtron IP encoder is converting specialty security cameras that you can only find made in BNC format to IP. Over the years, it has been hard to find reliable
pinhole cameras and hidden security camera models made in IP format. Now customers can add these specialty cameras to their IP based NVR camera system.

The Viewtron VT-VS5 IP video server is a great solution if you have existing coax cable and CCTV cameras in place, and it is difficult for you to replace your cable with CAT5 or CAT6 network cable. The VT-VS5 lets you use your existing coaxial cable and cameras with a Viewtron NVR. This lets you upgrade your security camera system to IP without replacing all of your coax cable and still take advantage of Viewtron AI functions.
Any new camera's that you install can be IP cameras. The CCTV cameras and IP cameras can co-exist on the same Viewtron NVRs. If you have any questions, please call, text, or email us anytime.
