Best LPR System (Replacement Products)

LPR system

The LPR-TV5 has been discontinued. We have a few replacement recommendations. The LPR-AHD5 is our best selling CCTV LPR camera (coax cable + BNC video connector). It supports HD-TVI, AHD, HD-CVI, and analog CCTV (CVBS) video modes) However, if you are looking for overall best LPR camera system, please take a look at our Viewtron IP based system that includes an ANPR camera and network video recorder with built-in automatic number plate recognition software (ANPR).

The LPR-TV75 has traffic modes that can be adjusted for highway, road, gate, and parking applications. This camera has a built-in infrared capability that allows it to be used in well-lit areas and on roads with no lights. This camera has a 7-22mm varifocal lens that lets the installer adjust the zoom level of the picture. This camera is designed to be mounted up to 45 feet (14 meters) from the target recording zone. The camera should be mounted less than 16 feet / 5 meters high. The less of an angle to the target license plate recording zone, the better this camera works. This camera has been tested to be effective in capturing license plates on moving vehicles up to 65 MPH / 105 KM/Hr. It can also capture plates on slowly moving vehicles and vehicles that are completely stopped.

The LPR-TV75 is an HD-TVI camera type. HD-TVI cameras are hard-wired to a surveillance DVR using RG59 coax cable just like traditional analog CCTV cameras. CCTV Camera Pros recommends any of the "M" or "H" series iDVR-PRO DVRs that we supply for use with the LPR-TV75. Those iDVR-PRO models are hybrid and can be used with HD-TVI, AHD, and analog CCTV cameras. They can also record 1080p security cameras at 30 frames per second at 1080p resolution. 30 FPS recording is recommended for license plate capture systems. You can learn about the iDVR-PRO DVRs that we recommend for LPR applications here.

Important Note! CCTV Camera Pros highly recommends using this camera in conjunction with a second camera that is used to provide an overview. The LPR-TV75 should be positioned and adjusted so that it closely captures the traffic lane being monitored. The overview camera view can be positioned much wider to capture a video overview. CCTV Camera Pros supplies this camera with an overview camera in this complete LPR system. We can also provide you with a custom quote and consultation. Please refer to these LPR camera installation instructions for more information.

LPR Camera Installation

Please use these recommended best practices in order to plan a successful license plate capture camera installation. It is important to mount the camera so that the camera view width is 16 feet or less at the point where plates will be captured. License plate cameras can not monitor wide areas and are expected to also capture small details like the numbers on a license plate. These are extremely important concepts to understand when planning a successful license plate capture system.

Horizontal Mounting Angle

HD License Plate Capture Camera Installation

LPR cameras should not be mounted at a distance to the left or right side of the viewing area at an angle greater than 15 degrees.

Vertical Mounting Angle

LPR Camera Installation

In order to capture the numbers and letters on a license plate, LPR cameras cannot be mounted at a height that creates an angle greater than 30 degrees. The less of an angle, the better, when it comes to license plate capture.

Image Capture Width

LPR Camera Installation Width

It is also important to plan the cameras field of view carefully. LPR cameras are not designed to capture a wide field of view. They are designed to monitor a focal width approximately equal to a single lane of traffic (about 16 feet). Because the LPR-TV75 is 1080p HD resolution, you can go slightly wider than this in some cases (as long as the vertical and horizontal mounting angles are minimal).

The following guidelines should be used when installing this LPR camera.

  1. Mount between 3 and 20 feet high (not to exceed a 30-degree angle).
  2. Mount between 12 and 45 feet from the area where vehicles will be passing so that the area of capture is about 16 feet wide.

License Plate Recognition Camera Setup

License Plate Recognition Camera Setup

The above diagram will assist installers with setup and installation of the LPR-TV75. The housing can be opened using the latches on its side to access the internal camera.

  • HD-TVI Video Out - this is a BNC female connection that provides the 1080p video output in HD-TVI format. Installers can use a cable from a spool of RG59 coax with a BNC male connector to attach this video output to an HD-TVI compatible surveillance DVR.
  • Power In - the power input on this camera uses screw terminals which allow installers to attach 18/2 power cable (like the type used in RG59 Siamese cable) directly to these terminals. For installers who prefer to use premade Siamese cable, a PT-4 power lead can be used.
  • Analog Video Out - this is a BNC female connection that provides low definition analog video output. This low definition video output can be used to connect an analog CCTV test monitor when installing and focusing the camera, however, we now supply test monitors for HD-TVI cameras and recommend these when installing HD security cameras.
  • Traffic Mode DIP Switches - these switches are used to set the camera's traffic mode based on lighting, traffic density, and vehicle speeds.
  • OSD Controls - installers can use these controls to access the camera's on-screen display to further adjust image settings.
  • Varifocal Lens - installers can adjust the zoom level / angle of view and focus of the camera using the two lens rings located here.

License Plate Capture Video Demo

The video shown on the left side of the screen was captured using an LPR-TV75. You can see the camera is able to capture a clear view of the license plates of the moving vehicles. The difference in quality, when compared to the analog CCTV camera video on the right, is remarkable.
